Vermicompost – Overview & its Tradition

Generally, earthworm has become the farmers true friend ever and is making our motherland and earth a wonderful place to exist. Earthworm live peacefully on the soil and enrich the benefits inside them. Knowing this fact, a culture has been developed by the people ; a culture where the decomposable materials extracted from our farm or kitchen are made eaten by the earthworm and the product is used in agriculture practices and thus this whole technique is referred as vermicompost. It doesnot directly influence the plant growth. It is mainly taken as soil conditioner and makes the condition of soil better, which automatically maintains the plant germination and development good later. It is also known as worm casting, worm humus, worm manure or vermicast. And in overall sense,it is known as “Queen of Compost”.

According to the study,it is said that the normal dung and compost that we use is not too good for plants proper growth. The reason behind this it that the they are not decomposed easily and may also contain several diseases. For the proper growth of plant ,NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and Pottasium) nutrients are required and in normal compost, we find the nitrogen content lesser. In vermicompost alone, four times more nitrogen is find in comparison to normal compost. So,due to this ,the recent increase in the use of chemical fertilizers is increasing rapidly which is providing harmful threat to both the human and environment. This is making the quality of soil degrade and more acidified. Urea contais 46% nitrogen and to get such amount of nitrogen by vermicompost, we should increase its weight.

There are various advantages gained by using this technique. Being rich in nutrients,it helps for the proper growth of the plant by providing required amount of NPK and other macro and micro-nutrients. It reduces the disease and infection in plants. It increases microbial activity in soil .It increases the water holding capacity ,porosity and aeration in the plant. It is important for reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and giving prior to organic farming. It leads to the pollution free environment and makes earth a comfortable place for survival . Since, the world is suffering much from the climate change impacts in the agriculture sector, this vermicompost technique would be favourable option for having better tomorrow. It is also easy to take in action.

We must be able to recognize a vermicompost, while buying because some seller can fraud people by providing other nitrogen based mixtures; in its name . For finding out the real vermicompost mixture, one must first keep some amount in hand and hold tightly . The mixture should not be wet and the print of the fingers should be seen in the mixture after holding. And after opening, they should fall smoothly. Besides this, the smell should be also be noticed which resembles the smell of soil. If we keep some amount of vermicompost amount in the base of the root, it doesnot burn but incase other nitrogen mixtures are used, then the plants burn.

One individual can conduct vermicompost procedures themselves without depending on others. They may perform this task on small or large scale both. For this, the following operations should be carried out well which is not too hard to perform. Such tasks are:

1.First of all we what we need to do is, select an area for placing the worm bin, which would be comfortable for both earthworm and human. We must keep in mind that the ideal temperature for the worm bin or container is 55-75degree fahreinheit.

2.Then we can buy a worm bin or we can also use storage container either. The storage container must be opaque for restriction to the entry of light and must have a lid or we will have to cover with black plastic. We should drill some holes in the worm bin or storage container for the proper air flow. We shouldnot directly place the worm bin on the ground. We should keep the large sheet of plastic on the floor and we can we some blocks for keeping the bin or container above it.

3. Before placing worms in the bin, we must use paper or cardboard for proper bedding purpose that retains moisture well. We must properly wet the bedding and then when the water has been soaked ,we have to spread the bedding into the bin or container properly.

4.After this,we can put debris-free soil over the bedding. We can add the food scraps(peels, leaves, cores, seeds from fruit and vegetables, tea bags, etc) over the soil.Close the lid of the bin and wait for maximum 2 weeks for the decomposition of food little bit before adding worms.

5. By making a big hole in the middle of the bedding ,we can add worms in the bin thoroughly. Frequently ,we must check how much the bedding is left and when it is totally transformed into compost,we can harvest. It may take 2-3 months time or also 6 months time depending on the mass and materials used in the process.

Vermicompost is an important operation to be conducted. It is beneficial for proper and nutritional production of crops. Lets try it for better transformation.
