Rice fish farming is an integrated farming in which pisciculture is done in the rice(paddy) field along with rice without impacting the quality and yielding of rice.It is based on mutually symbiotic relationship between fish and rice that is developed when introduced in the same ecosystem.
How can we do rice fish farming?
1.Site selection: we have to select the site having 70cm80 cm of water level.
2.paddy plot:60% to 70% of land is used to cultivate rice nd rest is utilized for digging small ponds.
3.Shelter pond:one or more pond is encaved at center of paddy field which serve shelter for fish and help them to survive from predator.
Which species of fishes are suitable?
- Fishes which can tolerate shallow water and high temperature upto 38°c are suitable.And they also must be capable of tolerating low dissolved oxygen.
- common carp, catla, rohu are some of suitable species.
Which verieties of rice are suitable?
-Rice which are late maturing and water lodge tolerance are suitable .
IR-42, IR-54,Bindeswori,chandina,sabitri,Radha-4 are some of the suitable varieties.
Management of rice fish farming.
.Fingerling of 1cm should be stocked.
.on an average fish fry density of 3000 to 4000 can be stocked per hectre.
.Rice field water depth should between 7-18 cm.
.Generally fish period is 70 to 100 days & fish must be harvest 1 week before rice harvesting.
What are the advantages of rice fish farming?
-improves soil fertility & soil health.
-Increase economic yield per unit area.
-solve the energy problem with bio gas.
-minimize the use of chemical fertilizer.
-Insect pest of rice can be eaten byfish.
-Larva of mosquito are eliminated by fish hence help in pubic health.
