Rainfed Agriculture: Risks, Problems & Solutions

Rain fed agriculture refers to such type of Agriculture which relies on rainfall for its need of water. Most of the countries over the world depend primarily on rain-fed agriculture for grain food. It holds a huge potential of production of food and it should be practiced in a proper way .

Rainfed agriculture accounts for more than 75% of the cropland in the world. it contributes about 60% to the total crop production in the world. With the growing population and other problems,Many countries are facing Harsh condition of poverty hunger and economic problems.

Though having such a huge potential of production. there are some risks and problems which can lead to the failure of crop cultivation some of them are listed below

  • Uncertainty of rainfall on rainfed areas may cause shortage of water during the need or cause difficulties during the harvesting.
  • Use of poor quality of seed is a major cause of crop failure. If the seed isn’t of good quality then rest of the efforts we put will not be worth.
  • Improper or inadequate use of fertilizers hinders the proper growth and development of the crops . Lack of nutrition results in retarded growth and low fruiting of the plants.
  • Lack of crop management practice.
  • Soil erosion on areas with high rainfall
  • Water shortage and droughts
  • Weed also gives strong competition to the main crops
  • nutrition depletion of the soil

and to overcome these types of problems following things can be performed

  • Proper conservation of rain water through water harvesting techniques. This helps to preserve the soil moisture and diminish the erosion of soil.
  • Construction of small dams and wells where water can be stored for certain time. Later That water can be used to prevent the crop from droughts.
  • Proper use of fertilizers and weed controlling can overcome the retarded yeild of the cropped plants
  • On sloppy rainfed areas , terrace farming should be practiced which helps to prevent the erosion of soil .
  • Minimum tillage should be done on areas with high risk of soil erosion.
  • Selection of crops and plants having low water requirement can be done to increase the chances of successful cultivation.

So, the potential of rainfed is obvious that it is capable to meet the increasing demand of food . For this , factors affecting rainfed Agriculture should be understood and managed properly.
